How It Works

We foster camaraderie within the running community that extends beyond race results—a community that trains, travels, and celebrates together year after year.

TEAM FORMAT

  • 7 Runners per team

  • Top 5 finishers score

  • Mixed or single-gender teams

  • Solo runners can be matched

ELIGIBILITY

  • Runners must be aged 21+

  • Clubs, communities, and solo runners welcome

  • First timers or seasoned athletes

FAQ


  • MTS is a team-based competition built into major half and full marathons. Teams of 7 compete cross country-style, where the top 5 runners contribute to a time-based team score, adjusted for age and gender to create a level playing field.

  • Runners of all ability levels and experience are welcome to join. All runners must be age 21 and over. Whether you’re joining as a solo runner, established club, or somewhere in between, there’s a place for you with Marathon Team Series!

  • Scoring is calculated by adjusting each runner’s finish time using age- and gender-based time bonuses, modeled on standards from the New York Road Runners Half Marathon and the Boston Marathon. This system creates a level playing field, allowing every runner—regardless of age or gender—to meaningfully contribute to their team’s performance.

  • We’re a team-based organization, so all runners compete as part of a team. You’re absolutely welcome to sign up solo and we’ll match you with a team so you can enjoy the full experience.

  • Not at all. Runners of all experience and ability levels are welcome. Thanks to our age- and gender-based scoring system, every runner can meaningfully impact their team’s performance, no matter their pace.

  • Yes. We align with the Portland Marathon’s gender policies. Non-binary athletes will receive the same age-based time bonuses as the women’s division, based on current Boston Marathon and NYRR qualifying standards.

  • No, just like cross country, all team members race the full course, and team success is based on individual finish times.
